Mighty Danube neutralizes toxic red sludge (AP)

Dead fish, victims of the toxic red sludge that spilled Monday from a giant industrial container, in the River Marcal near Boba, Hungary, Thursday, Oct. 7, 2010. 'Life in the River Marcal has been extinguished,' Rescue official Tibor Dobson told The Associated Press, referring to the river's 25-mile (40-kilometer) stretch that carried the red waste from Kolontar into the Raba River and onto the Danube. (AP Photo/Bela Szandelszky)AP - The mighty River Danube was apparently absorbing the toxic red sludge with little immediate harm, officials reported Friday — even though the amount of caustic slurry spewed over western Hungary was nearly as great as the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.
