Nigeria: Middle class in fear as kidnappings rise (AP)

FILE - In this Aug 2, 2009 file photo, Nigerian police stand guard outside a church in Maiduguri, Nigeria. Kidnappers who once targeted foreign oil workers are now abducting children for whatever ransom they can get. Those who can afford it hire police officers from elite and lethal units like the Mobile Police, or 'kill-and-go' as Nigerians refer to them. A report released in May 2010 by the Soros Foundation's Open Society Justice Initiative suggested about a fourth of the nation's officers are hired out as private security guards.
