Smog over Moscow worsens as wildfires rage (AP)

The buildings across the square become almost invisible as a tourist holds a handkerchief to her face as she walks along Red square amid a thick smog, in Moscow, Russia, Saturday, Aug. 7, 2010. The city of Moscow was shrouded a dense smog that grounded flights at international airports and seeped into homes and offices. Health experts say pollution such as carbon monoxide is four times higher than average. The concentration appeared likely to intensify with the state news agency ITAR-Tass reporting smoke thickening in the city's southeast late Friday. The fires, which are raging across much of western Russia, come after weeks of extraordinary heat — daily highs of up to 100 (38 C) and practically no rain.
