October 3rd, 2010

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem, right, assistant Syrian Vice-President Lt. Gen. Hassan Turkmani, centre, and Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, left, meet during the opening of the high-level Syrian-Turkish Strategic Ministerial Councilin, in the Syrian coastal city of Latakia, on Sunday Oct. 3, 2010. Syria wants Turkey to mediate its indirect peace talks with Israel and any other efforts would be subordinate to the Turkish role. Ankara mediated several rounds of indirect negotiations between the Mideast rivals in 2008 but the talks made no significant headway and were suspended following Israel's military offensive in Gaza the following year. Al-Moallem said Sunday any new indirect talks should be mediated by Turkey and must resume from the point where they left off.
