im sorry , i love beat happening but that is genius
oh, and the name is a direct reference to the six day “international pop underground” festival, which was crucial to the development of the indiepop scene. absolutely landmark event. wish i was alive then. :’(
this song is in reference to the strained relationship that punk and twee shared in the 80s-90s. henry rollins was known to attend beat happening shows and heckle calvin johnson. twee was just too fucking cute for punks, who were… well, angry.
yet punk undoubtedly had its influence on the indiepop scene. pitchfork said twee was punk for happy kids, or something like that, i dunno.
clearly “the international tweexcore underground will save us all” is talking about reconciliation of the two.
Taste isn’t “Good” or “Bad.” Merely subjective.
